| Another National Elementary Championship is in the history books. The Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners took home three trophies: 14th Place in the K-6 U1000 Teams, 15th Place in the K-6 Unrated Teams and Krisford Melanio, Maine's highest scoring player, received a 25th place individual trophy in the K-6 U1000 section. | |

| Five rounds have been completed at the 2010 Elementary National Chess Championships being held at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta. There have been many hard-fought battles with mixed results for Maine players. After four rounds, Deer Isle - Stonington held on to 19th place in the K-6 U1000 section and should improve their position in the crosstable based on good results in Round 5. | |

| The Burt Lerner National Elementary Chess Championships are in full swing at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta. Over two thousand of the strongest K-6 players from across the nation are competing for national titles in twelve sections. Maine has fielded eleven players in this seven-round, three day event. | |

Six players were on hand for the 4th Presque Isle Open played in Presque Isle on May 1, 2010. Roger Morin topped the crosstable with 3.5 points drawing with second place finisher Ray Haines in the last round. The previously scheduled PI Open for July has been rescheduled for September. Maine scholastic chess player Olivia Reale-Hatem from Cape Elizabeth competed in the Four Square World Championships on February 27, 2010 in Bridgton, Maine. Olivia recieved the Audience Choice Award for being the youngest woman to advance to the semi-final round. Congratulations Olivia! |

Grandmaster Alexander Ivanov and International Master David Vigorito tied for first with 3.5 points at the Freeport Open played on April 24, 2010 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Freeport. The four round, G/65 tournament attracted 65 players in three sections--Open, U1900 and U1300. |

We are very saddened to report the passing of Robert Jenkins on April 16, 2010. Robert was a stalwart member of the Saco Valley Chess Club in Biddeford as well as an active tournament player. Former MECA Vice President Jon Malev said of Robert, "He was the finest of friends." He will be sorely missed. Our sincerest condolences to Robert's family and friends. |

Maine Maritime Academy and the University of Maine Orono played a two-round, four-board, G/35 match in Barrows Hall on the UMaine Orono campus on April 6, 2010 as part of the fledgling Maine Interscholastic Chess League. UMaine's team showed their dominance by shutting out MMA 8-0.
