Forty-four players competed in five sections at the All Saints Winter Warm-Up Tournament at the All Saints School in Bangor on February 7, 2009. Top finishers were: Aaron Spencer (Open), Jaiwei Zou, Gianluca Pane, Paul Rudnicki (K-12), Alessandro Pane (K-8), Bethany Humphrey (K-6) and Max DeLuca Lowell (K-3). Curt scored 3.5 points to win the 2008 Downeast Open with a performance rating of 2190--a full 637 points higher than his rating at the time. Thirty players turned out for the St. Valentine's Day Massacre Chess Tournament on Saturday, February 7, 2009. (Room availability took precedence this year over historical accuracy.) The format was six quads and a six-player swiss each player playing three games at game in 60 minutes. |

Starting the new year off right, 34 players competed in the 2009 John Bapst New Year's Tournament on January 4, 2009 at John Bapst High School in Bangor. Two players well know in Maine chess circles found themselves at the top of the crosstable after the final round. Former State Champion Roger Morin and 2008 Chess Player of the Year Barry Magda both scored 3.5 points to share 1st place. George Spahn was perfect in the U1000 section with 4.0 points. |
