Forty players turned out for the Farmington Open Chess Tournament played on October 14, 2023 at the Farmington Community Center. The event offered three sections of US Chess rated play. A partnership with the Cobscook Institute in Lubec, Maine has resulted in two new chess tournaments being added to the Maine chess event calendar. The tournaments are scheduled to take place on Monday, January 15, 2024 (MLK Jr. Day) and Saturday, February 10, 2024. Our sincere gratitude is extended to the Cobscook Institute and, in particular, Programs and Communications Coordinator Beana Hopkins for their enthusiastic support for creating opportunities and building a strong chess community in Downeast Maine. |

The Alzheimer's Association, Maine Chapter, is partnering with The Park Danforth to pilot a new early-stage social engagement program focused on enjoying chess. The new club plans to host seven meetings in Portland this fall. |

The Maine Senior Chess Championship will take place on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at Bangor High School in Bangor, Maine. This event is open to players who will be 50 years old or older during calendar year 2023. The event will consist of four rounds of chess at a time control of G/60, d5. Round times are: 9:15, 11:30, 1:45. and 4:00. We hope to see you at the Maine Senior Chess Championship! |

The Maine Chess Association is instituting a Hall of Fame to showcase and honor Maine chess players and luminaries who have contributed significantly through their quality of play and promotion of chess. The initial group of ten inductees includes eight historical figures who are no longer active and Maine's highest ever rated male and female players. There will be opportunities in the future for MECA members to nominate Maine chess personalities to the MECA board for consideration towards Hall of Fame membership. It is our hope that the Maine Chess Hall of Fame will serve to both inspire Maine's chess players and provide education about Maine's rich chess legacy.The Hall of Fame will be a permanent feature at ChessMaine.net. |

US Chess has entered into partnership with the U.S. Center for SafeSport, a Congressionally chartered organization that is dedicated exclusively to ending sexual, physical, and emotional abuse on behalf of athletes everywhere. It was established in 2017 to help abuse prevention, education, and accountability take root in every sport covered by the U.S. Olympic movement. The U.S. Center for SafeSport makes its training and education resources available to other organizations outside of the Olympic movement. |

Maine's newest chess club holds the honor of being the easternmost chess club in Maine and by default the easternmost chess club in the U.S. The Lubec Chess Club is now meeting Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at the Lubec Memorial Library at 55 Water Street in Lubec. The Club attracted ten players at its third session. The Lubec Chess Club offers a friendly venue open to all level of players, with some instruction, casual games, and plans for US Chess rated events. Hope to see you there. |
