The first K-8 Chess Afternoon of 2008 will take place from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Monday, January 7, 2008 at the Ellsworth Middle School in Ellsworth, Maine. Matthew Fishbein, the nine-year-old wunderkind from Cape Elizabeth, won the Open section of the Third Annual Aurora Winter Solstice with 2.5 points in 3 rounds. The tournament, which attracted forty-six players, was played at the Airline Community School in Aurora, Maine on December 1, 2007. |

| Fielding ten boards, Orono High School plowed through Hampden Academy with the remarkable score of 20-0. Not a single loss or draw in twenty games! Meanwhile, Bangor High School surged passed John Bapst with a 9-5 victory to take control of second place behind Orono. On Saturday, December 1st, the third annual Aurora Winter Solstice chess tournament will take place at the Airline Community School, 26 Great Pond Road in Aurora, Maine. The tournament features four sections: Open, U1400, U1000 and U600/Unrated. Cash prizes are up for grabs in the Open section. In the lower sections, prizes feature chess sets, boards and books, including a wooden set and board for the top K-12 player in the Open. If you're still not convinced, the snack bar will offer a variety of homemade lunches and treats. Any skeptics left? |

| Colin Michael (a.k.a. the "Maine Yankee") of Dresden, Maine is passionate about all things miniature. As a skilled miniature craftsman, he has created countless scale model projects including furniture, rooms and complete houses that are as fascinating as they are beautiful. What really caught our eye though was a position from a Bobby Fischer game on a miniature set with a 3/8 inch king displayed on a 3 1/2 inch diameter Hepplewhite table with two matching chairs and upholstered seats all within an Early American period Captain's Study. |  |

John Bapst High School faced off against Orono and Bangor High School took on Hampden Academy in the third match of the PVC League season. Orono increased its lead over John Bapst to 6.5 points and Bangor is closing in on second. The current standings are: Orono 1st with 32 points, John Bapst 2nd with 25.5, Bangor 3rd with 21 and Hampden 4th with 5.5. The only players with six points are Fritz Eyerer (John Bapst) and Keji Xu (Bangor). | Chess teams from the University of Maine, Orono and Maine Maritime Academy played their first match on Thursday, November 15, 2007 in the newly-minted Maine Intercollegiate Chess League. The pilot match, played at the University of Maine's Nutting Hall, is the first in a series of chess competitions that will include UMaine, Maine Maritime, Bates College, Unity College and possibly others. The final results are in and the numbers have been tallied for the Maine Chess Player of the Year 2007 competition. As we previously reported, Ruben Babayan of Portland took the title with 46 points. This marks the sixth time Babayan has either tied for or won the title outright. Trailing Babayan were Derrick Crocker with 42.8 points, Scott Overlock with 40.5 points, David Rice with 39.3 points and rounding out the top five, last year's Player of the Year, Lee Doucette with 38.5 points. |
