There is one twist however, Haskell, a stay-at-home-mom in the Bangor area, will play her husband in public, on a board with three foot squares, using people as pieces. The 2007 World Chess Championship will be getting underway this week in Mexico City with the opening ceremony scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Tuesday, September 11, 2007. The first round will commence at 3:00 p.m. EST on the following day. This tournament brings together eight of the world's strongest players and qualifies as a Category XXI event, the strongest ever in the history of chess. |

| The Belfast Free Library will be expanding its offering of chess classes to children. Made possible by a grant from the Golden Rule Foundation, the library now offers chess instruction to students in first grade through high school. Scholastic chess coach Russell Kahn will be the instructor. |  |

Fall is quickly approaching and so are a number of interesting chess events. The Washington County Chess Federation celebrates its one year anniversary with the WCCF September Swiss in Pembroke. The Eastern Maine Open in Orono and the Maine Open in South Portland are coming right up. There will also be a human chess match--where the pieces are real people--taking place at Broadway Park in Bangor. Here are the details. |

| Students and chaperones from Chess-in-the-Schools, the wildly successful program that teaches chess to kindergarten through eighth grade children in New York's inner-city public schools, recently made the trek to downeast Maine for a cultural and chessic exchange with some of Maine's top scholastic players. In four fun-filled days, students enjoyed USCF-rated chess, blitz, bughouse, two cookouts, a lobster bake and most importantly, each other's company. |  |

The luxurious Crohn Family Conference Center in Perry, Maine was the venue for the first St. Croix River Valley International Chess Classic on August 18, 2007. Connecticut resident Tom Little topped the seventeen-player field with 3.5 points. He was closely followed by a group of four players tieing for second place with 3.0 points. | It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Franklin J. Richards at the age of seventy-two. Mr. Richards was a life member of the United States Chess Federation and for many years was very active in Maine tournament and scholastic chess. He had a passion for the game and he shared that passion with others. Mr. Richards will be sorely missed. |  |

GM Leonid Kritz scored seven points in nine rounds to win this year's New England Masters played at the Holiday Inn Boston-Peabody August 13-17, 2007. Following GM Kritz a half point back were GM Alexander Shabalov and IM Dean Ippolito. IM Robert Hess scored six points to take clear forth and IM Josh Friedel and FM Ray Robinson tied for fifth with five and a half. |

The New England Masters, a nine round FIDE rated swiss, is underway at the Holiday Inn Boston-Peabody and will run through August 17th. The tournament provides an opportunity for players to achieve Grandmaster and International Master norms. Max Enkin, co-champion at the James R.F. Quirk Memorial tournament played in South Portland, Maine on January 13, 2007, is on track for his first IM norm with four rounds to go.
