Proposed IM David Vigorito Lecture/Simul

ChessMaine.net along with the Maine Chess Association and the Portland Chess Club is planning an evening with International Master David Vigorito and we need your help. IM Vigorito is tentatively scheduled to give a lecture and simul at the Downeast Open at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 9th at Southern Maine Community College in Sourh Portland. In order to confirm IM Vigorito we need to hear from you. The cost of either the lecture or the simul is $15 or $25 for both. Portland Quick Chess Marathon

On May 14, 2011 twelve players gathered in South Portland to compete in the Portland Quick Chess Marathon. The event was a ten round, G/15 tournament in two sections (Open and U1500). Steve Abrahams took first in the Open section with 7.0 points and Brett Parker scored 8.0 points to take first in the U1500 section.

Maine Students Compete in National Junior High School Championship

In Memoriam: Bernard "Doc" Mann

We are very saddened to report the passing of Bernard "Doc" Mann on April 26th at the age of 101. He was a gracious gentleman and a true ambassador of the game we love. Our condolences to Doc's family and friends.

Cheverus Quik Chess Tournament

April 25, 2011

Cheverus High School, located in Portland, hosted a six round, G/10 quick chess tournament held on Saturday, April 2. The event helped raise funds to sponsor the Cheverus High School team trip to the National Scholastic team tournament being held in Nashville, Tennessee on April 29 - May 1. The Cheverus team earned the trip by winning the High School Championship section of the 2011 Maine Scholastic Team Tournament in Orono on March 5.

Why Good Thoughts Block Better Ones: The Mechanism of the Pernicious Einstellung (set) Effect

Cognition is an international journal that publishes theoretical and experimental papers on the study of the mind. It covers a wide variety of subjects concerning all the different aspects of cognition, ranging from biological and experimental studies to formal analysis. In this article the Einstellung (set) effect is considered using chess players as test subjects. The Einstellung (set) effect occurs when the first idea that comes to mind, triggered by similar features of a problem, prevents a better solution from being found.

Alan Schalk Wins State Championship

April 25, 2011

Alan Schalk defeated Jim Dubois in the final round of the Maine State Championship, played in Augusta on April 9-10, 2011, to score 5.0 points and become the 2011 State Champion. Matthew Fishbein, the tournament's youngest player, finished a clear second with 4.0 points. Richard Judy and Ruben Babayan tied for third with 3.5 points - both of which included half-point byes. Finishing with 3.0 were Jim Dubois, Barry Magda, Curt Brock, Don Plummer, and Dan Lavallee.

UMA State Championship Warm-Up Tournament Report

Six players paticipated in the UMA State Championship Warm-Up Tournament played at the University of Maine's Augusta campus on April 3, 2011. The original idea was to coordinate with interested students and the university community as an introduction to chess tournaments. As it turned out, the event became more of a warm-up to the state championship. The organizers indicate that more of these tournaments are in the pipeline--stay tuned to ChessMaine.net for details.
