Maine Chess Association Board Election Official Ballot

Hello MECA Members! It is time to elect Officers and Directors of the Maine Chess Association for the upcoming term. The members we elect this month will assume their positions on January 1, 2023, and provide leadership to MECA for one or two years, depending on position. Officers are elected for a two-year term, while Directors are elected for one year. Some candidates have chosen to submit brief statements, and those are provided below.

Second Annual South Portland High School Tournament Report

November 27, 2022

A whopping ninety-two players competed in the 2nd Annual South Portland High School Chess Tournament played on November 19, 2022. The event had three sections: Open, U1400, and U800. Wyatt Hendrix won the Open section with a perfect 4.0 points. Gavin Cooley did the same in the U1400 section and went from unrated to provisional 1700 in one go, and Avery Zhang and Henry Shannon finished equal first with 4.0 points in the sixty-player (!) U800 section.

MECA Call for Nominations

November 16, 2022

The Maine Chess Association is now accepting nominations for all four officer positions and all four director positions for the 2022 election cycle, which begins on December 1, 2022. All officer positions are electable to two-year terms, and all director positions are electable to one-year terms.

Farmington is Home to Maine's Newest Chess Club

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of chess organizer Glenn Miller, Maine's newest chess club has been established in Farmington. The Farmington Chess Club will meet Friday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Farmington Community Center at 127 Middle Street in Farmington. Skowhegan Fall Classic Tournament Report

November 13, 2022

Twenty-seven players came out for the Skowhegan Fall Classic chess tournament played on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at Skowhegan Area High School. Players competed in two sections. The U1200 section was won by Joshua Lorenzo with a perfect 4.0 points in four rounds. Anthony Benoit followed suit putting up a perfect 4.0 in his first US Chess rated tournament. In Memory: John Curdo (1931-2022)

October 17, 2022

With great sadness we report the loss of John Curdo who passed away on September 30, 2022. Known for over 50 years as one of the strongest players in New England, John racked up over 1,000 career tournament victories including 17 Massachusetts State Championships and the US Senior Championship. Our deepest condolences to John's family, friends, and chess siblings on the loss of a true gentleman and great titan of chess.

MECA Offers $9 US Chess Scholastic Memberships

The Maine Chess Association is making available 300 scholastic memberships in the United States Chess Federation for Maine scholastic players at the reduced rate of $9.00 for a full year's membership. This price represents an over 50% discount from the current rate.

Gabe Eaton Wins George Cunningham Brilliancy Prize for Q2 2022
