Maine Chess Association Calls for Committee Service

The Maine Chess Association is calling upon any interested members in good standing to assist the MECA Policy Board in charting a course for the future. In particular, the Maine Chess Association is looking for members to serve on the Scholastic Planning Committee, the Finance and Fundraising Committee, and the Strategic Planning Committee.

Roger J. Morin Memorial Chess Tournament Report

Matthew Fishbein, Max Berube, Wyatt Hendrix, Gabe Eaton, Aaron Spencer and Will Ravn traveled to Belgrade, Maine over Juneteenth weekend to play the second Roger J. Morin Memorial chess tournament. They warmed up with a double round of blitz at G/3;+2 and a single round of rapid at G/10;+5, both won by Fishbein with a total of 13/15 before settling in to play a hard-fought FIDE rated 40/90, SD/40;+30 for the title.

In Memory: Dr. John Raymond Phythyon, Ph.D., 79

With great sadness we report the passing of Dr. John Raymond Phythyon, Ph.D. at the age of 79. John was a prolific chess player on the New England circuit competing in tournaments such as the Boston Chess Congress (MA), the Bradley Open (CT), and the Portsmouth Open (NH). John's last tournament, played just four months before his death, was the National Chess Day tournament in Kennebunk, Maine. We extend our deepest condolences to John's family and friends.

Deer Isle-Stonington Chess Player Henry Penfold Named Valedictorian

June 15, 2022

Congratulations to Deer Isle-Stonington High School senior Henry Penfold on receiving the school's valedictorian honor. Henry is a longtime member of the Deer Isle-Stonington Chess Team, National Honor Society, Student Council, and participated in cross country, theatre, tennis, band, Eco Club, and Math Team. Henry will be studying marine biology at Bodoin College this fall.

Mainers at 90th Massachusetts Open

Five Mainers competed in the 90th Massachusetts Open played on Memorial Day weekend in Westford, Massachusetts: Wyatt Hendrix and Aaron Spencer in the Championship section, Will Ravn in the U2100, Hayden Tittle in the U1800, and Sam Silberstein in the U1500.

Pawn Wise: The Atlantic All-Ages Chess Festival 2022 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, July 29- August 2

Pawn Wise: The Atlantic All-Ages Chess Festival 2022 will take place at St. Mary's University in Halifax, Nova Scotia from July 29- August 2. The Festival offers the Mayflower Open, the Canadian Seniors Championships (65+ and 50+), and Jack de la Torre from the University of Texas as keynote speaker. In addition, a specially commissioned Nova Scotia Commemorative Chess Set will be on display as well as first editions of Andre Philidor's Tabular Demonstrations (1819) and The Hastings Chess Tournament Book (1896). American players are welcomed to participate.

Glenburn Middle School Competes in the 2022 Middle School National Chess Championships

Glenburn Middle School competed in the 2022 National Middle School (K-8) National Chess Championships at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas on April 29 - May 1. The Glenburn team took 7th Place in the U900 section and 13th Place in the U700 section. Congratulations to the team and their coach Tom Coleman!

Kate Gasser Classic Swiss Tournament Report

On April 16, 2022, the first running of the Kate Gasser Classic Swiss took place at Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick, Maine. Named for a frequent presence in the US Women's Championship and member of the Boylston Chess Club, the Gasser Swiss is a Swiss tournament open only to girls and women and is meant to celebrate the presence of female players on the tournament scene in Maine and elsewhere.
