Morin Memorial Tournament Report

Thirty-one players in three sections turned out at the Roger J. and Lois Morin Memorial Tournament at the University of Maine Memorial Union on September 11, 2021. The Morin Memorial Tournament is held in September in memory of Roger Morin, a former Maine State Champion and tournament director who was a pillar of the Maine chess community for decades. Lois Morin, Roger's wife, established the tournament in his honor as a fundraiser for the Roger J. Morin Scholarship Fund, which paid out its first scholarships this year to Wyatt Hendrix, Isaac Dinnerstein, and Zachary Brislin. Lois passed away in April 2020.

Maine Chess Association Receives Honorable Mention From Chess Journalists of America

Maine Well Represented at the Continental Open

Sturbridge, MA Nine Mainers entered the three or four day, seven round Continental Open in mid-August. Eight sections were offered, attracting 375 players. Elizabeth Mock attended the tournament and summitted this report.

Ben Mock Wins Class B Prize at U.S. Open

While representing Maine at the 37th annual GM Arnold Denker National Tournament of High School State Champions, Ben Mock found the time to participate in--and win--the Class B prize at the 2021 U. S. Open in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Congratulations Ben on crushing it in Cherry Hill!

Mainers at the US Chess Scholastic Invitationals in Cherry Hill, NJ

The Maine Chess Association nominated four young players to represent the state at the national "Tournament of Champions." Each player won their respective individual qualifying tournament and was named state champion or co-champion. Maine Chess Association Director Elisabeth Mock attended the tournament and submitted this report.

Max Berube Wins Maine State Championship

August 9, 2021

Forty-six players from five states came out to compete in the Maine State Championship at the Waterville Grand Hotel in Waterville, Maine, from July 16-18, 2021. This iteration of the tournament offered two sections in two schedules, and was the best attended state championship in almost a decade.
