The Story of MECA's International Matches

Maine Chess Association President Michael Dudley recaps the fascinating story of the Maine Chess Association's four international chess matches over the past three months. Since November 2020, MECA has faced off against the Republic of Tuva, a remote Russian republic in Southern Siberia, Bikin, a town in the far-eastern Khabarovsk Krai Region of Russia, and played two matches with the Tromsø Chess Club in Norway.

Maine Online Middle School Chess League Update

On January 25th, middle school players across the state logged on to Chess.com to launch the first ever Maine Online Middle School Chess League. Fourteen teams joined the league from schools across the state, with a total of 108 players competing! We will be continuously updating the results as the league continues.

Maine vs Tromsø, Norway Match II Results

February 2, 2021

After Maine won the first match vs the Sjakklubb of Tromsø, Norway on 29 November 20 by the score of 22-18, the Norwegians brought out their A Team and won the second match held on lichess.org on 31 January 21 with an impressive score of 24-12. Despite the loss, there were some highlights for the Maine team including an interesting draw earned by current Maine State Co-Champion Wyatt Hendrix in his game vs GM Ben Notkevich.

Greetings to and from Boris Spassky

The Maine Chess Association joined with eleven chess associations, federations, and Russian organizations to commemorate the 84th birthday of the 10th World Chess Champion Boris Spassky with an official proclamation. Just after the proclamation was delivered we received a letter of greetings in return signed by the World Champion himself.

Maine Chess Club Plays Tromso, Norway to Celebrate Boris Spassky's 84th Birthday

Today is Boris Spassky's 84th birthday. To commemorate and celebrate this auspicious day the Maine-based chess club Batani will play a match vs the Tromso, Norway Sjakklubb at noon eastern on Sunday, January 31, 2021. You can watch the match on the Batani Club Page on lichess.org. We wish the 10th World Chess Champion the best of health and happiness!

Maine Online High School Chess League Week 2 Report

There was a flurry of close, nail-biting action on Thursday and Friday, January 21-22, 2021 as the matches in the second week of the Maine Online High School Chess League concluded. A new sixth team, Hampden Academy, entered the scene, matching up against Morse High School for their Maine chess debut.
