In Memory: Allan James Braff (1930-2020)

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Allan James Braff of Cape Elizabeth. Allan was a good friend of the Maine Chess Community often visiting The Works Bakery Cafe for Sunday morning chess. His close friend and fellow chess player Jon Malev described Allan as a tough fun-loving opponent and a furious tactician. Our most sincere condolences and sympathy are extended to Allan's family and friends.

Maine is fielding four players in an online match with Pennsylvania scheduled for tonight (Tuesday, September 8th at 7:00 p.m. eastern.) This match is part of the States Cup, and online tournament organized by Saumik Narayanan. The Maine match will be commented on by our very own Michael Dudley and Bill Hartt. 2nd Bangor City Championship Tournament Report

The 2nd Bangor City Championship was played on August 9-10, 2020 at the Creative Arts Center in Brewer, Maine. One of the few over-the-board tournaments to take place in Maine over the past few months, the Championship attracted six players who participated in a five-round G/75 +15 tournament. The States Chess Cup Match: Looking for Maine Players

Saumik Narayaan, a talented young organizer from Minnesota, is organizing an online chess match between states modeled after a series of matches played between the state of Minnesota and the province of Manitoba dating back to 1935. Each state will field four players who will play four games at 15 minutes + 2 seconds per match with one match contested each week. Mark Maynard Wins 2019 Maine Correspondence Championship

Mark Maynard won the 2019 Maine Correspondence Chess Championship by a clear 2.5 points over his nearest rival Wyatt Hendrix. Maynard scored a perfect 8.0 points in the eight-round event that was played online. His game vs Hendrix was recently featured in the Chess Life online blog The Check Is In The Mail. Congratulations to Mark and all who participated in this event.
